Israel Strikes Syria Without Alerting Washington

Israel carried out strikes on a Syrian military base this week without giving the United States advance notice, prompting a rare public rebuke from US envoy Tom Barrack, who said Washington had not been adequately warned — a claim Israeli officials denied. The strikes came as Israel also continued operations in the West Bank, where settlers and military units injured multiple Palestinians and Israeli construction bids opened for new housing units in occupied territory. The Syria episode has exposed genuine friction between Washington and Tel Aviv over operational coordination, even as the broader US-Israel alliance remains intact. A separate Israeli strike near Damascus drew condemnation from Syria's new government, which called it a violation of international law.
