Stripe acquires AI gateway startup OpenRouter for $7B+

Stripe has clinched a deal to buy OpenRouter, a startup that routes developer queries across multiple AI models, for more than $7 billion. The acquisition gives Stripe a foothold in AI infrastructure at a moment when managing model access and costs has become a core engineering problem for enterprises. OpenRouter's CEO had previously pitched the company as essentially "Stripe for AI."
