Illinois Passes America's Strongest AI Safety Law

Illinois has passed legislation requiring major AI companies — including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google — to obtain third-party verification that they are meeting safety standards, the strictest such mandate in the US. Governor JB Pritzker has said he will sign the bill, setting up a potential model for other states at a moment when federal AI regulation remains stalled. The law puts Illinois ahead of California, which failed to pass its own landmark AI safety bill last year.
